It’s been almost 3 years that I’ve been suffering from lip eczema and eczema on my cheeks and it has been healing quite well now.

I’ve been using Protopic Ointment 0.1% for my eczema for 2 years now. I only need to apply it every other day. This one is good enough that I don’t need to change to another solution.

As for my lip eczema, I don’t need to put any medication anymore.

Previously, I was trying out on Vaseline Lip Therapy Petroleum Jelly, Advanced Formula. It worked for a while but it made my lips even drier after 7 days of usage. Since then, I’ve decided to give up on petroleum jelly solution. I heard they suck you dry after some time, hence your eczema might get worse.

7 months ago (one of my worst week at work) when I had one of my worst eczema outbreak, I found Avene Lip Balm with Cold Cream and Eucerin Lip Activ for sensitive skin at Guardian. I bought the both of them to test out.

Avene Lip Balm with Cold Cream
Avene Lip Balm with Cold Cream (packing)

Avene Lip Balm with Cold Cream
Avene Lip Balm with Cold Cream

The Avene one was quite good when it comes to moisturising but it feels too thick for my liking and it also makes your lips pale (when you slab it on, the white of the lip balm goes to your lips if you get what I mean). I only use it when I sleep. After 1 month, I threw it away as it wasn’t helping much and it made the dry skin even thicker.

I thought Eucerin could be better than Avene but boy was I wrong! I threw it away after 2 weeks. I think this will be a good lip balm for people without lip eczema though. It’s better than the Avene for normal lip balm usage.

Now you’ve come to a point where you get angry reading this post and start shouting in your head “SO WHAT’S THE CURE? WHY AREN’T YOU TAKING MEDICATION/SOLUTION FOR YOUR LIP ECZEMA ANYMORE? PLEASE TELL ME! I DESPERATELY WANT TO KNOW!!!”

The cure for my lip eczema was plain simple.

500ml of De-stress
1 litre of Sleep
Gallons of h2o

It helps when you have someone you love by your side, making you happy and takes your stress away :)

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THIS: Wipe the side of your lips dry after drinking from your bottle (germs! germs! germs!)

Let me know if it did help you. For me, lip balms can’t help me anymore. All I need is less stress and more sleep! I still do get lip eczema but only at times when I’m sleep deprived or when I’m too stressed with work. You take care too :)

Hi there. I just left a long note on your other blog. Protopic has been working for me too after experience with many other antibiotic, antifungal, and steroid creams. However, I also have been prescribed oral Diflucan, an antifungal, 100 mg a day. It cleared everything up for me, lip ezcema, painful cracks corners of mouth, lip burning and swelling and coated tongue, after 4 weeks of use. However, symptoms did come back so my dermatologist has put me back on it for a much longer trial run. Candidiasis (an overrun of yeast) could be the culprit for many sufferers of lip rash discomfort. I am also going to be tested for food and chemical sensitivities which can also be triggered from systemic yeast infection. Will keep you posted.

Hi Diahann, thanks for sharing your experience and the names of medications that your dermatologist prescribed you. One thing about this lip eczema is that some med works for some while some don’t :(

Hmm… I think I should get tested for food and chemical sensitivities too. Please do keep me posted :)

Hi Qiqi! I came across your blogspot by googling ” Eczema on lips” and now I’m here :D

I just moved to USA about 4 years ago and I never have such problem when I was in my motherland!
I started having this ” Tight, Severely dry and itch and burn and swollen and cracked lips”
It’s not just on lips but skin around it also burns (and red and itch all the time) and has this rash-like.
I went to Derm 3-4 yrs ago and was prescibed sth I forgot the name and got to try Protopic Sample size for a short while. I didn’t continue to the derm. It was my fault-I only gave her like couple months period.

From what I’m experiencing.. do you think it’s Eczema? Comparing to your overall symptoms.
I have a doubt between Eczema or Psoriasis. My symptom is kind of On and Off, mostly On. It just came back this Summer!
If my symptom is very similar to you , please please let me know so I will hurry schedule appointment with my Derm and cancel one with nutritionist!
Please confirm, you can do it here or email me :)

Loads of thanks to you and other commentors!

Ps. I have treid every Lip Balms, Lip treatment, Chapstick, Vitamin E Stick, anything you see in the store. Some sucks big time! Some work well at the beginning.
I was cleared up by Blistex (White tube with red stripe) or maybe I thought I was cleared up by the thing though It might just be the “Off” time. Blistex does not work anymore this time but it cools the burn which I know it’s just temporary.

I’m on Vitamin E Stick at the moment. I even put Sorbolene cream on the skin around my lips. (Blue Lizard brand)
It doesn’t help heal my symptoms but it keeps my skin from being dry and tight and yeah just temporary.

I’m tired :(

Oh I even took Diflucan too but w/o prescription! I know it’s bad that’s why I only took 1 tablet and 1 day. I did this twice within this month. First time seems to work, this time- not much. Somehow Diahann’s comment kind of give me some hopes. I will mentin this to my derm!

Hi Som! Does your rash looked like it’s psoriasis? Mine definitely doesn’t look like psoriasis.

Mine comes on and off too but it all depends on my lifestyle - It is mostly ‘on’ when I don’t have enough sleep or too stressed out at work or life.

Hehe it seems that you all used and tried more medication than I do. I only have Protopic for my eczema on the face and a normal ointment from my GP for the lip eczema (which I don’t know the name coz it’s put into a small white container).

I’ve a friend who used to have eczema too but she’s completely out of it now without taking any medication except for daily Vitamin E supplements for more than 10 years. I heard that some people will grow out of it.

My lip eczema doesn’t really itch now comparing to the time when I first got it. I also think that it is healing now - Slowly but surely. I’m tired about the eczema and lip eczema too but oh well…

I ‘m on L-Lysine daily now. Some ppl tell me it’s a n amino acid that’s good for skin and lips. Dont’ see omprovement yet but I’ve only been on it for less than a month. Adding Vitamin E as my supplement sounds good, I will try.

Mine looks more like Eczema and I was told by Derm before that it’s similar to Eczema. It just that the more I searched ppl did mentin that Psoriasis on lips is possible and the symptom is similar to eczema, in term of Redness, dry, tight, and maybe swell.

Thanks Qiqi :D

Hope L-Lysine will do good for you. Good luck! :)
