How do you advise someone who is much older than you to take care of their health? If that person is your daddy, how would you advise him over his diet and lifestyle? I can’t say that I have a healthy diet and lifestyle either but that doesn’t take away the rights I have to be advising someone I care about, will it?

It is frustrating to hear about your own parents sickness. High blood pressure, diabetes, bronchitis, stroke and what not :( You hear them talking about it sometimes. Here pain, there pain. And then suddenly it got worse and what’s even worse is when your parents doesn’t have an insurance! That’s when YOU as the beloved son/daughter suffered financially. It’s not that you don’t want to pay for their medical fees but it’s just that you think that they should have thought of you… on your financial ability… and that they should have cared for themselves in the first place so that they can live a happier and healthy life instead of being very happy now and suffer a lot later.

No matter how, your advice will still fall on deaf ears. I remembered once after I gave a long lecture about my daddy’s diet, he told me “If I don’t eat/do this now, I don’t know when I will ever have the chance to eat/do this again in the near future.” Of course it is quite true as well. I can’t deny that we should make the best out of our life and that this is the moment and this is the day… that we must live every moment as we live our life. Just like the Japanese quote ichinichi issho (within each day is a lifetime).

But still I think he should control his diet for the sake of everyone of us including himself! Sigh… I’m born into the family with the surname “obstinate”. I know where I got my stubbornness and hard neck from.

Sometimes its necessary to be hard on your parents. Especially when they can no longer take care of themselves. To truly love someone can be tough and difficult. At times force is necessary to prevent the person you love from getting themselves into bigger problems.

Yes we need to make the best of each day, but it is also necessary to take into account the people around you and your own future.

Instead of telling them Dont eat this and that.. perhaps you can offer them an alternative. I have seen many healthy cook books with really yummy food. It’s good to return them the favour of cooking for them while picking cooking skills.

Besides eating, excercising is also important. Take them out for a walk, simple aerobics or do some light excercise and breath more fresh morning air.

and most importantly drink more water. Fetch them a glass of water whenever you remember.

QiQi QiQi says: thanks for the suggestions :) will try to do so hehehe~
